Sexual Dysfunction in Women – Ayurvedic Herbal Treatment

Sexual dysfunction in women may be related to problems with desire, arousal, orgasm and pain. Medications, diseases, excessive use of alcohol, vaginal infections, depression, relationship problems, abuse, pregnancy, breast feeding, menopause, stress, fatigue and boredom may all cause sexual dysfunction.

The Ayurvedic treatment of sexual dysfunction in women is aimed at controlling the symptoms and treating the known cause. Diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure can result in sexual dysfunction. Diabetes can be treated using medicines like Haridra (Curcuma longa), Mamejva (Enicostemma littorale), Gudmar (Gymnema sylvester), Shilajit (Purified bitumen), Vijaysaar (Pterocarpus marsupium), Nimba (Azadirachta indica), Chirayta (Swertia chirata) and Karavellaka (Momordica charantia). High blood pressure can be treated using medicines like Sarpagandha (Rauwolfia serpentina), Khurasani ova (Hyoscyamus niger), Dhamasa (Fagonia cretica), Sutshekhar-Ras and Praval-Bhasma.

Vaginal infections can be treated using medicines like Triphala-Guggulu, Sukshma-Triphala, Chandraprabha-Vati, Maha-Manjishthadi-Qadha, Ashoka (Saraca indica), Triphala (Three fruits), Vasa (Adhatoda vasaka), Daruharidra (Berberis aristata), Udumbar (Pipes glomerata), Ulatkambal (Abroma augusta) and Shalmali (Bombax malabaricum). Depression can be treated using medicines like Shrung-Bhasma, Laxmi-Vilas-Ras, Arjunarishta, Drakshasav and Dashmoolarishta. Anemia and fatigue can be treated using medicines like Lohasav, Punarnavadi-Mandur and Tapyadi-Loh. Stress can be treated using medicines like Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Vacha (Acorus calamus), Shankhpushpi (Convolvulus pluricaulis) and Mandukparni (Centella asiatica).

General sex tonics can be used effectively for women with sexual dysfunction. These medicines include Makar-Dhwaj -Ras, Ashwagandhadi-Churna, Suvarna-Malini-Vasant, Trivang-Bhasma, Chandraprabha-Vati, Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus), Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), Shilajit, Gokshur (Tribulus terrestris), Kuchla (Strychnos nuxvomica), Samudrashosh (Argyreia speciosa), Lavang (Caryophyllus aromaticus), Kababchini (Piper cubeba) and Akarkara (Anacyclus pyrethrum).

In addition to medication, it is important to adopt simple and practical steps to address various aspects of sexual dysfunction. A change in routine, generating a relaxed and romantic environment, adequate recourse to foreplay, use of appropriate lubricants and solving personal issues with the partner, are all important and vital issues in the management and successful treatment of sexual dysfunction in women. Serious problems should be referred to a counselor or a sex therapist.
